The West Coast Super Comp Race Club Goes to Infineon Raceway
Mangili Memorial Race
It was with heavy hearts that 27 West Coast Super Comp racers filed into Infineon Raceway July 3rd, 2010. While on a calendar it was just another date it was anything but ordinary for the West Coast Racing Club. For July 3rd of 2010 was the Inaugural Michael Mangili Memorial race. Michael was a Son, Husband, Father, racer and friend who will never be forgotten and will forever be in our hearts. We lost Michael November 12th of 2009 to Leukemia/ Lymphoma. The out pouring of emotions and the sheer number of cars was a testament to the love that surrounded Michael. Godspeed 701D.
While continuing to persevere Rick Mangili has taken over the driving duties and continued to fly the colors of Robert Burns construction on his own inaugural racing season. Rick’s 7th place in the standings and a semi final appearance at the Sacramento National Open has proven he’s a skilled driver and a worthy adversary behind the wheel. As a club we are honored to have Rick as a member of the West Coast Super Comp family.

West Coast Super Comp Race Club Went To Fallon Nv
High(Altitude) Expectations
Next up on the rigorous 2010 West Coast Super Comp race schedule was Fallon Nevada. The Club’s return to Fallon had them thinking that some heavy hitters out of the Southern California area might attend looking for an early tune up for the Division 7 race the following weekend. Ten West Coast regulars ventured over the Summit following the same path the Donner Party did back in 1847. Let’s hope the club members had better results.
Fallon is at best unpredictable in June. Sometimes it will even snow which to me seems very strange. After all it is the desert. Other times dust storms have interrupted racing momentarily. However, on this weekend while the track sits at nearly 4000 feet elevation the adjusted altitude typically flirted in the 5300 range. All and all the weather was very manageable.

Inaugural NHRA Unleashed event at Atlanta Dragway in 2010
RACE DATE: June 11-13, 2010
Atlanta Dragway had the honor of hosting the inaugural NHRA Unleashed event, a televised four event series for 2010 featuring ten classes of racing for all makes of automobiles, an interactive manufacturer’s midway, car show, car corral, swap meet, kid zone, autocross course, and even a “Beat the Heat” program, pairing anyone who wanted to race an actual police officer on the track. The interactive portion of the midway featured a regulation autocross course, a go-kart booth, and even a Kid Zone play area featuring rides and inflatable slides. The midway had many performance oriented goodies from manufacturers like B&M, McLeod, Hurst, Edelbrock, MSD, Quick Fuel and more.
Another program being recorded for play in November and December was the “Who Wants to be a Race Car Driver” series. Sixteen contestants will be selected from entrants at all four 2010 events. The finalist will win a full year NHRA Super Comp ride, complete with truck, trailer, race car, and enough cash to cover the costs of competition for a year. The casting tent remained busy for the entire weekend.

Kathy Fisher Grabs Quick Rod Victory During IHRA Div 3 at Pittsburgh Raceway Park
|
The Fisher Racing team at Pittsburgh Raceway Park. Photos by: BME Photography |
After the first few events were either scratched from their schedule or plagued by rain, the team cars of Performance by Fisher Racing were finally able to hit the track for the first time this season during the IHRA Division 3 season opener held at Pittsburgh Raceway Park in New Alexandria, PA, May 7-8.
Kathy Fisher, driver of the team's 8.90 entry, had quite a week leading up to the event.
"I started my week by first driving to just outside of Philadelphia for some of the TV work I do. Man that was a lot of driving," she laughed. "I left on Tuesday and when I was finished, met up with the team at the track on Thursday, hoping we could get some testing in since we really haven't been on the track much at all this year. It seems so strange to be getting such a late start, but that's Mother Nature for you."

Kern stops Madrid for Lucas Oil Super Comp Race 6 title
By Bob Johnson Fontana, Calif. June 27, 2010
Glenn Kern ran a near-perfect 8.901 in the final round of eliminations to win the sixth race of the 2010 Lucas Oil Super Comp Assoc., series, defeating NHRA-Jeg’s SportsNationals champion Andrew Madrid in the final round. For Kern, a top runner in the West Coast Super Comp Race Club, where he is second in the series championship points, and leads the WCSCRC shootout points. This weekends victory moved him into sixth place in the standings, just 28 points out of the lead.
Nevada racer Corey LeClair was the events top qualifier, laying down an 8.903 for the Auto Club/Clay Smith Cams awards. Kern and Bobby Dye Jr. both ran 8.904 times for the second and third spots, and Andy Ablot and Matt Fischle logged 8.906 times for the fourth and fifth spots on the ladder.
The third round of action began with Morgan Rash defeating Val Torres, Curt Stewart took a .005 margin-of-victory win over Brian Mendenhall’s ’27 Ford roadster, Kern strapped a perfect .000 reaction time to beat Eddie Fischle, Madrid used a .017 package to beat Matt Fischle, and Mangus got a bye.
Kern opened the quarterfinals with a win over Curt Stewart, breaking out by .002, Madrid denied Mangus the opportunity to ‘double-up’ as he used a .007 light to stop the Newton Racing machine. Rash advanced on a bye run. In the semifinals, Madrid and Rash locked up in a double-breakout race, with Madrid taking the win 8.883 to an 8.874. Kern got a bye into the final.
In the final round, Kern got a .002 advantage at the Tree--.023 to .025—and took the win light with a stellar 8.901, 167.71 to Madrid’s second best of 8.918, 167.82. Kern credits Mickey Thompson Tires and Wheels and SportsmanOnly.com for his success. Madrid, who is currently fourth in the Pacific Division point’s championship, is sponsored by Madrid Motorsports and Lucas Oil.
With six of the eight races on the Lucas Oil Super Comp series completed, Chad Langdon holds a 3-point lead over Gabe Torres, 330 points to 327, Matt Fischle is third with 318, and Ray Medrano is next at 317. Greg Krause (307), Glenn Kern (302), Bobby Dye Jr., (298), Guy Aguyayo (291), Morgan Rash (288), and Rob Symons (267) round off the top ten going into the series final at Auto Club Dragway on August 28-29.

Ryan Mangus wins first Lucas Oil Super Comp event
By Bob Johnson Fontana, Calif. June 26, 2010
Ryan Mangus drove the Newton Racing Super Comp dragster to his first Lucas Oil Super Comp Assoc., series event, defeating Val Torres Sr., in the final round at Auto Club Dragway. The race was the fifth of the 8-race series.
Guy Aguayo picked up the Auto Club and Clay Smith Cams bonus awards for qualifying his Aguayo Racing/Crower dragster in the number one spot with an 8.901. Chuck Babcock was second—also earning an Auto Club/Clay Smith award—for qualifying second at 8.902. Chris Forsyth was third at 8.903.
Mangus opened eliminations with a perfect reaction time win over defending champion Matt Fischle, he then stopped Lee Davidson, and in round three beat points contender Ray Medrano, as Medrano drew a -.005 red light. Mangus beat Rob Symons in the quarterfinals, and got a bye in the semifinals.
Val Torres won his first round match against Glenn Kern with a .009 reaction time, he knocked off Jeff Derencin in the second round and used an .008 light in round three to stop Ed Krzywicki. Torres and Greg Krause had one of the tightest races of the weekend—maybe the season—when both drivers ran 8.883, with the win light going to Val as he had a .006 light to Greg’s .007! In the semifinal, Val won a double-breakout race with John Richardson.
The Mangus and Torres final promised to be a good race, with Mangus getting the win at 8.906, 171.73 (.003 reaction time) to Torres second best of 8.877, 175.87 (.028 reaction time). Mangus and Torres each received certificates from Clay Smith Cams, and Madrid Motorsports supplied the winner plaque. Contingency sponsors for the race included Crew Chief Pro 7.0, Westminster Transmission, T&D Machine, and Hughes Transmission and Converters.
