After the drive to Redding and the unseasonably frigid temperatures up North most of the West Coast Super Comp competitors were happy to be back at Infineon Raceway for race numbers 4 and 5. On Sunday two non members jumped over from the bracket and made the total number of entries 17. The most the club had register at any one race of the season. This was going to be fun.
At the end of qualifying one of those bracket racing specialists, Dave Cook grabbed the one spot when he ran a very respectable 8.907 at 177mph. While everyone is welcome to race with the wcscrc they also secretly do not appreciate being schooled by outsiders. Since most of the members know and like Dave they decided to let it slide. With the odd number of cars this also meant Cook would race in the 2nd round via the bye in round one. After handling Dave Alves in the second round Cook’s next opponent was 2009 Champion Glenn Kern. Kern had no love for the bracket racer and beat him at both ends of the track. Glenn would be racing in his first final of the year as he enjoyed his own single pass in the semi-finals.

Atlanta Dragway experienced a good turnout of racers for their Summit ET Series event, in spite of predictions of rain. Rain did slow the program earlier in the day for about 15 minutes, but the track dried quickly. Two long-time Junior Dragster racers from Cartersville , GA enjoyed claiming their first ever win in their respective Junior Dragster class during today’s competition. Jim Onda’s Super Pro dragster was the picture of consistency, running in the 4.85 second range all day.
Super Pro saw an all-dragster finale, with Jim Onda ( Danielsville , GA ) in a ’96 Boling against Don Brown, Jr. ( Buford , GA ) in a ’00 Spitzer. Onda jumped a .019 green light on a 4.85 dial-in, as Brown claimed the tree with a formidable .008 reaction time on a 4.83 dial. The men were neck-and-neck until Onda crossed first with a dead-on elapsed time at 141.77 mph for the win. Brown finished with a 4.84 second run at 141.76 mph, giving Onda a .005 margin of victory. “The car was working great today, thanks to Brad Howard and his machine shop,” Onda said, also thanking his wife Dee, and his family “for letting me do this.” Onda’s machine was incredibly consistent, running 4.857 in the quarter and the semi-final rounds. Phil Owens ( Lithia Springs , GA ) took his ’05 M&M dragster to the semi-finals.

Four winners walked away with big paychecks after last weekend’s Thunder Valley Bracket Challenge at Bristol Dragway.
Chad Hedgecock of Loudon defeated Milton’s Chad McKee on Thursday to take home the top prize. Hedgecock’s winning run included a .013 reaction time, with a 4.724 elapsed time (4.71 dial-in) at 141.68 mph. McKee ran a little faster than his dial-in (4.754 E.T. on a 4.76 dial) to receive the disqualification.
Jason Lynch of Pleasant View earned Friday’s victory at the Bracket Challenge. Lynch defeated Sevierville’s Carrol Click with a .006 R.T. and a 5.314 second run (5.29 dial-in) at 127.01 mph. Click’s losing effort had a .015 R.T. and a 4.726 E.T. (4.71 dial-in).
Gary Williams drove his dragster the top spot on Saturday, with a win over Kenny Underwood of Delaware, Ohio. Williams’ used a stellar .004 R.T. and a 4.700 E.T. (4.68 dial-in) at 143.00 mph to oust Underwood. Underwood went faster than his dial (4.615 E.T. on a 4.62 dial-in), handing the win to his opponent.
Tommy Plott used a .016 R.T. to earn a holeshot win in Sunday’s final round over Troy Williams Jr. of Bradenton, Fla. Plott’s 4.910 E.T. (4.89 dial-in) at 140.49 mph was good enough to defeat Williams’ .044 R.T. and 4.663 E.T. (4.66 dial-in) which was only .003 off of the dial-in.
Thunder Valley returns to action with the Fas Mart Street Fights Series on Thursday, June 3 and the DER Bracket Racing Series June 5-6.

The forecast of rain may have kept some at home but the ones who showed up
early got as many as 5 time runs in prior to going into final elimination's.
This was great news for those planning on attending this weekends 2 day
Summit ET Series races set for May 30-31 and the opportunity to test out
different combinations and set ups on their race cars before heading into
the weekend event.
The Police Officers were almost perfect against the high school students in
the Top The Cop's elimination's rounds and only a victory by Marin Academy
student Jeff Watt prevented the sweep.

Mike Ferderer has fourteen NHRA Super Gas national event wins |
Former NHRA Super Gas Champion Mike Ferderer certainly knows what it takes to persevere in the tough sportsman classes that he competes in with his K&N Pontiac Grand Am, after all he has a total of three championships.
Ferderer is about as professional as they come and easily proved that all over again during the Summitracing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
While at other events he may run in Super Comp or even Top Sportsman, since his car is capable of running in the seven's, Ferderer chose to compete at this event in Super Gas and went in to the opening round of eliminations set on kill.

Commerce, GA Racers eagerly returned after a long break, following the 30th annual Southern Nationals, making for the best turnout Saturday Insanity at Atlanta Dragway has seen since its start in 2009. The event saw enough Open Comp entrants for a $1,000 prize, and many finalists from the first Saturday Insanity event made it to the finals a second time, some for revenge and some for defense. Fortunately, the skies purged themselves Friday evening, giving a clear, albeit hot and humid, Saturday race. Diana Harker’s Top Alcohol Dragster lent more excitement to the event. Her team was testing various tuneups, and made several high 3.70 second, 205mph plus half track passes for the crowds enjoyment. Racers were also pleasantly surprised to find the Contingency Connection program has been renewed, which gives awards to each winner that uses a sponsor’s product and displays the sponsor’s decal on their race car.

Slate Cummings Wins NHRA Wally at Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park |
Cummings Motorsports, a.k.a. The Bayou Boyz, has had numerous successes on the many levels of drag racing they compete in, from bracket racing all the way up to World Championships.
While one of the drivers for the team, Slate Cummings, has also added his fair share of that list of accomplishments, winning an NHRA National event had eluded him over his years of competition.
"I've been running the NHRA circuit pretty hard over the last four years," said the Hammond, Louisiana resident. "Before the Houston event, I'd made it to one other NHRA National final and that was in Stock. It was in my very first year of running NHRA. I just didn't get to seal the deal then."
